
Men's Tennis Host ECU Fall Shootout This Weekend

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's tennis team will open up its fall slate of tournaments Friday as the Pirates host the ECU Fall Shootout at the River Birch Tennis Center. The Pirates will open the tournament Friday when they take on Richmond at 2:30 p.m. ECU will be back on the courts Saturday at 8:30 a.m. to face College of Charleston before closing play Sunday at 8:30 a.m. against James Madison.
No team scoring will be utilized this weekend. Instead, the players will be competing as individuals in a flighted tournament.

"We are very excited to begin competition this weekend against a talented group of teams," Pirate coach Shawn Heinchon said. "College of Charleston won the Southern Conference last season and James Madison returns two all-conference players. We are looking forward to a challenging tournament."
The 2011-12 Pirate men's tennis team features five returnees and five newcomers, all freshmen. Only two players that were part of the Pirates' lineup that took to the courts during the 2011 Conference USA Championships return. Headlining the list of returnees is sophomore Joran Vliegen, who posted an 18-7 singles record as a freshman. Also back for the Pirates is junior John Schmitt, who posted a 17-9 ledger in individual competition and second-team all-conference performer Mario Martinez, who won 77 percent of his singles matches during his rookie campaign. Rounding out the list of returnees are senior David Masciorini and junior Nathaniel Smiley.
