Pirates Complete Play At ITA Carolina Regional

CARY, N.C. -- East Carolina's men's tennis team completed play at the 2012 USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships on Saturday. The four players that participated combined to post a 5-6 singles record and a 1-2 doubles mark.
Joran Vliegen reached to the third round of the singles competition before bowing out to eighth-seeded Andrew Mellow of Furman (6-2, 6-2). Vilegen posted straight set victories over College of Charleston's Crescente Lesser (6-2, 6-2) and South Carolina Kyle Koch (6-2, 7-6 (4)) to advance.
John Schmitt and Nicolas Soriano each earned first round victories before being ousted. Schmitt took out Kczystof Kwasniewicz of Charlotte in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) and fell to top-seeded Henrique Cunha of Duke (6-2, 6-2).
Soriano knocked out N.C. State's Ivan Sanchez (7-6, (5), 3-0 retired) in his opening round match and was then defeated by sixth-seeded Raphael Hemmeler of Duke (6-4, 6-3). Charlotte's Jodi Ferrer outlasted the Mario Martinez in three sets (7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-3) to give the Pirates' their lone first round defeat. Martinez and Soriano also suffered consolation round losses.
Vliegen and Soriano teamed for a first round doubles win over N.C. Central's Jose Fabara and Fabrice George (8-2), but were then eliminated in the second round by UNC Wilmington's duo of Pedro Mol and Zach Hablitz (9-7).
Schmitt and Martinez paired up as well, but were defeated in the first round by the Wake Forest tandem of Daniel Kreyman and Adam Lee (8-4).
The Pirates will conclude their fall season at the "Big Jim" Russell Invitational in Chapel Hill beginning Nov. 2.
