
ECU Has Three-Match Winning Streak End At Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. --- East Carolina University men's tennis team had its three-match winning streak ended Saturday afternoon with a 5-1 loss at Appalachian State. The loss dropped the Pirates' overall record to 7-3, with all three losses coming on the road.
The Pirates scored their lone point at No. 1 singles as sophomore Joran Vliegen defeated Alex Markov in three sets with each set going to a tie-breaker. Vliegen dropped the opening set, but rallied for 7-6 triumphs in the final two stanzas (8-6, 7-5).
The Mountaineers claimed the doubles point with Philip Kloc and Sebastien King defeated Vliegen and freshman Nicolas Soriano at the No.1 position (8-6) as did Alain Humblet and Markov against David Masciorini and Niels Cleeren at the No. 2 spot. ECU won the No. 3 flight with John Schmitt and Patriek Wolterbeek taking down the ASU duo of Zeke Sansing and Andrew McKinnon (8-3).
Kloc, Humblet, King and Steve Karendal won singles flight 2-5 in straight sets to clinch the Mountaineers' victory.
ECU returns to action on Friday, Feb. 24 against Christopher Newport at the ECU Tennis Complex.
