Pirate Hitter-of-the-Week
Tim Younger, Senior, 2B
Younger continued his hot hitting over the week and extended his current hitting streak to seven games, where he is batting .550 (11-for-20) and has an on-base percentage of .625, both of which lead the team and Conference USA ... On the week he batted a team-best .455 (5-for-11) with a double, one RBI, two walks and scored four runs, tying Corey Thompson with the most on the squad ... Against ODU he registered his third multi-hit game of the season (ninth career) going 2-for-4 with a double and two runs and also stole his first base of the 2012 season ... In the Ninth Annual Keith LeClair Classic, Younger recorded a hit in all three games and against Maryland in the LeClair Classic finale reached base three times (hit and 2 walks) and tallied six total bases in all four games ... He posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in the field on the week recording 14 putouts and 12 assists.
Pirate Pitcher-of-the-Week
Tyler Joyner, Junior, LHP
Joyner notched his second win of the season in his first collegiate start against Western Carolina (Feb. 25) ... The southpaw worked seven innings allowing one runs (earned) on three hits with three strikeouts ... Against the Catamounts, he retired the side in order four times and did not face more than four batters in any inning and only allowed four runners to reach base (3 hits, 1 hit by pitch) ... In two outings on the season, Joyner is 2-0 with a 0.77 ERA ... He has allowed just one run (earned) on four hits with a walk and seven strikeouts in 11.2 innings of work ... Joyner is holding opposing batters to a composite .108 average.
PIRATE NOTES
Despite its 2-2 record on the week, ECU's pitching staff posted a 2.25 ERA allowing 13 runs (nine earned) in 36.0 innings with 26 strikeouts and 10 walks ... On the season as a whole they sport a 1.57 ERA in 63.0 innings with 54 strikeouts to just 14 walks ... In seven games, ECU has allowed 17 runs (11 earned) and are holding opposing hitters to a composite .196 batting average ... The bullpen has been impressive so far this season surrendering just two runs (one earned) on 14 hits in 25.2 innings and boasting an outstanding 0.35 ERA.
Junior Andy Smithmyer made his ECU debut this week working two games in relief where he allowed just one run (earned) on seven hits with eight strikeouts, one walk and posted a 1.42 ERA in 6.1 innings ... Against ODU he recorded his first win of the season working three innings allowing one runs on four hits with four punch outs ... In his last outing against Maryland, Smithmyer entered the game in the fifth inning with one out and the bases loaded and induced a 6-4-3 double play to get the Pirates out of the jam on just three pitches ... He struck out four in three innings of work allowing three hits.
Senior Corey Thompson batted .375 (6-for-16) on the week with a pair of home runs, four RBI and four runs scored ... Both of his homers were came in the first inning (ODU, Purdue) ... On the weekend he collected a pair of multi-hit games pushing his career total to 55 ... Against Purdue he was 2-for-4 with two RBI and against Western Carolina led all players with three hits (3-for-4) with a run scored ... Currently he batting .462 (12-for-26) with two home runs, two doubles, eight RBI and six runs ranking among the team and C-USA leaders ... His .769 slugging percentage tops the Pirates stats and ranks first in league action (all games).
Sophomore INF/RHP Drew Reynolds picked up his third save of the season against Western Carolina working a scoreless ninth ... In the tournament finale against Maryland, he entered the contest with the bases loaded in the ninth allowing a hit and striking out two ... In four appearances this season, he boasts a 0.00 ERA with five strikeouts and one walk in 3.0 innings and has recorded three saves.
Senior Kevin Brandt suffered his first loss of the season against Purdue allowing six runs (three earned) on seven this with one walk and four strikeouts in seven full innings ... The left-hander retired the side in order four times but couldn't escape three Pirate errors ... On the young season he is 1-1 with a 1.98 ERA in 13.2 innings ... Brandt has struck out a team-best 13 batters, while ranking fifth in C-USA, and has issued just two free passes.
Freshman Jeff Hoffman tossed two scoreless innings against Purdue allowing two hits ... On the season he has worked three innings (all relief) with one strikeout and has not allowed a run.
Head Coach Billy Godwin recorded his 483rd career and 221st Pirate win on Saturday against Western Carolina ... He ranks second all-time on ECU's wins list and trails only ECU Hall of Famer Gary Overton (427).
