ECU Advances To Match Play Quarterfinals Before Being Eliminated

BRADENTON, Fla. - East Carolina's men's golf team split a pair of matches on Sunday during the first day of action at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship at The Concession Golf Club.
The ninth-seeded Pirates defeated Iowa in the margin of victory tiebreaker six holes to five during the first round of play before falling to top-seeded Arkansas during the afternoon round, 4-1.
Against Iowa, Ryan Eibner and Eric Brady recorded 3 and 2 and 3 and 1 advantages. Iowa's Barrett Kelpin led ECU's Harold Varner 1-up in the final hole of the final match but Varner's birdie on No. 18 halved the match and clinched the win for the Pirates.
Arkansas dominated its second-round match against East Carolina, winning 4-1. The Razorbacks took the first three matches with wins by Thomas Sorensen, 7 and 6, Sebastian Cappelen, 6 and 5, and Kolton Crawford. David Watkins claimed ECU's only point. Ethan Tracy completed the scoring for Arkansas with a 1-up victory.
The Pirates will face Oklahoma State tomorrow morning in the consolation bracket.
