Pirates Take Down Oklahoma State In Match Play Championships

BRADENTON, Fla. --- Seniors Adam Stephenson and Harold Varner took victories at the top of the lineup as East Carolina defeated 10-time NCAA champion, fourth-seeded Oklahoma State, 3.5-1.5, in the third round of the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship.
The ninth-seeded Pirates, who defeated Iowa and lost to No. 7 Arkansas Sunday, advanced in the consolation bracket and will face sixth-seeded Indiana Tueday at 8:30 a.m. The winner will finish fifth in the event. The Hoosiers defeated 10-seeded Tennessee, 3 and 2, Monday after having beaten Kennesaw State and losing to Duke on Sunday.
Arkansas and Duke will meet for the championship Tuesday. The top-seeded Razorbacks swept its five matches against Chattanooga to win its semifinal bout Monday, while the third-seeded Blue Devils nipped second-seeded California, 3 and 2, in the other semifinal. The Mocs and the Bears will play for third place.
"Oklahoma State is the gold standard of NCAA golf," Pirate head coach Press McPhaul said. "They are a really good team and I'm really proud of how we responded to the challenge today."
Varner defeated Talor Gooch, who is ranked 11th individually in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Ratings, 4 and 2. Stephenson knocked off Sean Einhaus, 4 and 3, while sophomore Ryan Eibner was victorious over Patrick Wither, 2 and 1. Senior David Watkins halved his match against Brad Gehl. The Cowyboys' Tanner Kesterson logged a 2-up win over Eric Brady.
