BRADENTON, Fla. - The East Carolina men's golf team wrapped a successful week at the Callaway Match Play Championships with a sixth-place finish Tuesday after falling to No. 6 seed Indiana, 3.5-1.5, at the Concession Golf Club.
Harold Varner picked up ECU's only win on the day, defeating Chase Wright, 1-up. The two were all square through 16 holes when Varner birdied No. 3 to go ahead. Each individual then pared the final hole to complete the match. Varner finished 2-1-1 on the week.
Adam Stephenson halved with the Hoosiers' David Mills to give ECU half a point. Indiana's Brant Peaper defeated David Watkins, 3 and 2, while Corey Ziedonis defeated Ryan Eibner, 2 and 1. David Erdy downed Eric Brady, 4 and 3, to conclude the competition.
ECU finished 2-2 on the week after defeating No. 8 seed Iowa Sunday and knocking off No. 4 seed Oklahoma State Monday. The Pirates were eliminated from championship competition in the second round by top-seeded Arkansas.
The Pirates will return to the links on Friday, April 6 at the River Landing Intercollegiate at in Wallace, N.C.
