
ECU Downs UNCG To Snap Brief Slide

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis team snapped a two-match slide Wednesday, defeating UNC Greensboro, 5-2. The Pirates won the doubles point, taking a 1-0 lead into singles play and won four of the six singles matches.
Joran Vliegen and Niels Cleeren defeated Orcun Seyrek and Ahmet Sarioglu, 8-3, at the No. 1 doubles to start play, followed by a win at No. 3 doubles by Nicolas Soriano and Damien Brenard to secure the doubles point. The duo defeated Jimmy Rouche and Cameron Smith, 8-5. ECU's lone setback in doubles play was Randy Phillips and Chanon Varapongsittikul defeating John Schmitt and Patriek Wolterbeek, 8-4, at the No. 2 doubles.
Four singles players won their matches, leading to the 5-2 advantage for the Pirates. Vliegen defeated Seyrek (7-6, 6-1) at No. 1 singles followed by Soriano downing Varapongsittikul (6-3, 6-2) at the No. 3 spot. Brenard defeated Smith (6-2, 3-6, 6-3) at the No. 5 spot before Mario Martinez downed Rouche (6-2, 6-4) at the No. 6 singles.
The Spartans won their two points at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, as Sarioglu defeated Cleeren (5-7, 7-5, 7-5) and Phillips downed Schmitt (6-4, 6-4) at No. 4 singles.
The Pirates return to action on Saturday, March 24, against Richmond.
