
Pirates Take Down The Citadel, 5-2

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The East Carolina men's tennis team won the doubles point and top four singles matches to post a 5-2 win over The Citadel on Tuesday at the Earle Tennis Center. With the victory, the Pirates earned their first road win of the season and improved to 9-4 overall.
The match began with ECU winning all three doubles matches, 8-4. Joran Vliegen and Niels Cleeren teamed at No. 1 doubles for the first time to defeat Peter Bleach and David Orces. Freshmen Nicolas Soriano and Damien Brenard triumphed over Dillon Berkabile and James Atkinson, while Patriek Wolterbeek and John Schmitt beat Elliot Sperr and Alex Howle.
The Pirates recorded three of their four singles victories in straight sets as Vliegen, Soriano and Schmitt captured wins at No. 1, 2 and 4. Cleeren's match went the distance, but he outlasted Berkabile at No. 4 after dropping the second set.
ECU returns to action on Thursday, March 8 against Charlotte. The match is scheduled for 12 p.m. start on the UNCC campus.
