Pirates Finish Third At Wolfpack Spring Open

RALEIGH, N.C. --- The East Carolina men's golf team carded a 3-over 291 Sunday to finish in third-place at the 2012 Wolfpack Spring Open at Lonnie Poole Golf Course on NC State University's Centennial Campus. The Pirates finished with a two round total of 9-over 585 (294-291), finishing eight strokes behind tournament champion NC State (292-283=577).
ECU finished four strokes out of second-place as Lamar claimed runner-up honors at 5-over 581 (292-289). The Pirates distanced themselves by five strokes in front of fourth-place Middle Tennessee State (304-286=590) and were 11 strokes better than fifth-place Louisville (295-301=596).
Luke Jerling of Lamar birdied Nos. 15 and 16 to win the individual title over Jay Mulieri of Loyola (Md.) by one stroke. Jerling shot a final-round 4-under 68 to finish at 5-under 139.
Senior Harold Varner was the Pirates' top finisher at 2-over (74-72=146), tied for 11th. Fellow senior David Watkins finished one stroke behind his teammate in 13th at 3-over (74-73=147). Senior Adam Stephenson also finished among the field's top-20 in 18th-place at 4-over (73-75=148). Senior Zach Edmondson (73-76=149) and sophomore Ryan Eibner (78-71=147)tied for 21st at 5-over.
The Pirates will return to action Sunday, April 22 at the 2012 Conference USA Championships in Texarkana, Ark. The 54-hole event is being held at the Texarkana Country Club.
