Vliegen Wins First Round Match At Indoor Championships

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - East Carolina senior Joran Vliegen opened the 2013 ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in comeback fashion with a three-set win over Dane Webb of Oklahoma Thursday afternoon.
Vliegen, 2013 Carolina Region champion, dropped the first set 6-2, then rallied to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-4. Webb, No. 44 in the ITA Preseason Singles Rankings, was ranked 43 places ahead of Vliegen, who has now defeated six opponents that had a higher singles ranking than him this fall.
Vliegen moves into the round of 16 and will face fifth-seeded Gonzales Austin of Vanderbilt Friday.
