Pirates Move Closer To Leader At Rees Jones Invitational

DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C. - The East Carolina University men's golf team currently sits in fifth place after the two rounds of play at the 2013 Rees Jones Invitational. The Pirates carded the second-lowest score of the day amongst the 12 teams competing on the par-72, 7,380-yard Haig Point Club Jones Signature Course.
After shooting 10-over 298 in the first round, the Pirates cared a 4-over 292 during Monday's second round. Only South Carolina's 290 was better than ECU's round two score. Overall, ECU is 14-over and sits one stroke behind UNC Wilmington (+13) for fourth place, two back of the Gamecocks (+12) for third and three shy of Kennesaw State (+11) for second.
South Florida, who is the only team to post a subpar round thus far, leads the field at 7-over 583. The Bulls shot 2-under 286 Sunday and fired 9-over 297 in the second round. USF's Chase Koepka (-6) leads the individual field by three stokes over Payne McLeod of UNCW.
Entering the day two strokes off the lead and tied for second, redshirt sophomore Al Dickens fell into a three-way tie for fourth-place at even-par. Dickens fired a 2-over 74 during second round play after shooting 2-under 70 in the opening round. He was 3-over through five holes Monday before birdieing three of the next six holes to get back to par. However, bogeys on 13 and 18 dropped him to 2-over on the day.
Seniors Eric Brady and Ryan Eibner each moved into a six-way tied for 20th at 4-over with their second round play. Brady fired a 1-over 73 to move up from 32nd, while Eibner carded a 72 after shooting 4-over 76 Sunday.
Sophomores George Kilgore and Jacob Hicks, who is playing as an individual, are tied for 32nd at 8-over. Hicks shot 4-over 76 for the second consecutive round, while Kilgore took six strokes off his score to move up 23 places after shooting 7-over 79 to open the tournament.
Kilgore was 4-over though six second round holes, but birdied four of the next five holes to move to 2-over. He shot 3-under on the final 13 holes to finish the round with a 1-over 73.
Rounding out the Pirate participants, redshirt freshman Josh Chandler is in 67th at 12-over par (156).
The teams return to the course for the final round Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. ECU will be playing alongside UNCW and Troy beginning at 8:50 a.m. off the first tee as part of a shotgun start. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
