
Seven Pirates Named 2013-14 NFCA All-America Scholar Athletes

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced the 2013-14 All-America Scholar Athlete honorees. The NFCA recognized 4,687 softball players across seven membership divisions. East Carolina contributed seven student-athletes to that total.
Gabby Andino, Sarah Christian, Alex Fieldhouse, Jill Jelnick, Lydia Ritchie, Caroline Umphlett and Abby Wynne were among the Pirates who collected the honors after earning a 3.5 grade-point average or higher.
"I'm ecstatic that seven of our players earned recognition from the NFCA regarding their academics," Head coach Beth Keylon-Randolph said. "The NFCA is a prestigious organization that epitomizes what college athletics is all about."
The NFCA reported that NCAA Division I had the most student-athletes, with 1,105 honorees awarded, while 1,020 players in Division III scored recognition, followed by 741 in the High School Unweighted category. NCAA Division II had 695 honorees, High School Weighted amassed 584 recipients, NAIA had 359, and junior college totaled 183.
The Pirates managed to keep up a 3.5 cumulative GPA while also finishing the 2014 season with a 28-20 overall record and a 14-10 conference ledger.
East Carolina will begin fall competition Saturday, October 11, at 11 a.m., when the Pirates host USC-Beaufort at the ECU Softball Stadium.
