Pirates Grab Hold Of Second Place At Pinetree Invitational

KENNESAW, Ga. -- The East Carolina men's golf team posted a two-round total of 586 (+10) to finish in second place Monday at the Pinetree invitational at the 7,108-yard, par-72 Pinetree Country Club.
The Pirates carded a 295 (+7) in the first round and a 291 (+3) in the second round to finish the day 29 strokes back of tournament leader Kennesaw State, which is playing on its home course. The Owls have a total of 557 (-19) after shooting rounds of 276 (-12) and 281 (-7).
Florida Gulf Coast is in third with a total of 591 (+15), followed by Liberty (593) and Jacksonville State (595).
ECU juniors Wes Conover and George Kilgore along with redshirt freshman Jackson Spires, who is filling in for the injured Al Dickens, are part of a five-way tie for 10th at 3-over 147. Kilgore opened by shooting 2-under 70 in round one before posting a 3-over 77 in round two. Spires reversed Kilgore's rounds while Conover shot par in the second round after carding a 3-over during the opening 18 holes.
Freshman Tim Conover and junior Jacob Hicks are tied for 25th at 7-over. Conover carded rounds of 79 and 72, while Hicks shot 78 and 73.
Kennesaw State players own the top three positions in the individual standings led by Fredrik Nilehn, who carded a 10-under 134. He set a tournament record by firing an 8-under 64 in round one and followed with a 2-under 70 during the second round. The Owls' Austin Vick is in second place at 7-under followed by Jimmy Beck at 6-under in third place.
Final round action begins Tuesday at 8:10 a.m. The Pirates will tee off alongside Kennesaw State and Florida Gulf Coast at approximately 9:10 a.m. from hole No. 1.
