DURHAM, N.C. - The East Carolina women's tennis team concluded its fall season at the Kitty Harrison Invitational, hosted by Duke and North Carolina in Durham and Chapel Hill last weekend.
The Pirates opened play Friday, Nov. 7 with doubles matches, as freshman Sara Sarjoo and sophomore Betsy Zurawel collected the first win of the day, 8-4, over NC State's Taylor Zaytoun and Ashleigh Capannolo. Freshman Maria Gomez and sophomore Maria Storozheva teamed up against William & Mary's Melanie Roy and Cecily Wuenscher and pulled out an 8-5 victory.
ECU moved into singles play during the afternoon session with six singles contests against the Wolfpack, but was unable to pick up a victory, despite two of the matches being decided in three sets.
Saturday was a short day for East Carolina, as it played just a trio of doubles matches against tandems from Wake Forest. Castro and LaDuca represented the lone Pirate unit to collect a win in the three matchups, cruising to an 8-2 victory over the Demon Deacons' Samantha Asch and Kimmy Guerin.
On Sunday, the final day of competition, ECU played five singles matches against players from Virginia and Maryland, as Nicole LaDuca battled her way to a three-set win over Maryland's Ekaterina Tour. LaDuca gutted out a 6-4 win in the first set, but dropped the second frame, 6-2. She went on to take the third-set tiebreak, 10-6, to close out her weekend on a high note.
East Carolina will begin its spring season with a home dual match on Jan. 29, 2015 against N.C. Central at 3 p.m.
