GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina softball team pounded out 26 hits en route to a pair of Conference USA road wins over Charlotte on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates won the first game, 4-3, before hammering out 19 hits in the second contest to earn an 11-6 victory over the 49ers. ECU had just three total extra-base knocks in the two victories.
In game one, East Carolina (15-7, 4-1 C-USA) took advantage of a one-out error by the 49ers in the top of the third inning and followed up with a single by Chelsea Kaluhiokalani-Glackin and a two-out, two-run double by Kristi Oshiro to give the Pirates the early edge.
Charlotte (9-12, 1-4 C-USA) mustered a two-out rally in the bottom half of the inning with a walk, RBI triple and RBI single to tie the game, 2-2.
ECU used great plate-discipline to reclaim the lead in the top of the fourth on one hit and three walks. The third free pass was issued to Shelby Johnson with two outs and the bases loaded to put the Pirates back on top, 3-2.
The 49ers drew even again in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of hits, the second an RBI single up the middle with two outs. East Carolina responded once more in the top of the sixth inning on a two-out, RBI single to right field by Kaluhiokalani-Glackin, her third hit of the game, to give ECU a 4-3 lead.
Caroline Umphlett pitched the final two scoreless innings for the Pirates, allowing no hits and striking out one to earn her first save of the season.
Kaluhiokalani-Glackin finished the game 3-for-4 with a run and RBI, while Johnson went 2-for-3 with a walk and one RBI in her 11th multi-hit game of the season. Sarah Christian (11-2) earned the win, going five innings, while allowing seven hits, three runs, one walk and struck out two.
In game two, East Carolina took advantage of a Charlotte fielding error with two outs in the top of the first inning, as Johnson hustled around third on the mishap to put ECU ahead, 1-0.
The third inning brought forth offensive explosions for both teams, as the Pirates applied immense pressure on the 49ers in the top of the frame. Johnson and Oshiro hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, before Abby Wynne hit an RBI single through the left side. A fielder's choice and walk to Jordan Lewis brought Casey Alcorn to the plate, and she hit an RBI single of her own to left. Two batters later, Jasmine Robbins hit a two-out, two-run single through the left side to give East Carolina a 5-0 lead.
Charlotte responded in the bottom of the inning by loading the bases after two walks and a hit batter to chase ECU starter Gabby Andino from the game. Umphlett took over in the circle, but the next batter hit a grand slam home run over the center field fence to cut the Pirates' lead to just one.
East Carolina got the bats going again in the top of the sixth inning after an RBI double by Wynne scored Johnson and a sac fly by Alex Fieldhouse scored Oshiro to make the score 7-4.
Although Charlotte got a run back on two hits in the bottom of the inning to cut its deficit to two, the Pirates used five hits, two sac flies and one 49er error to score four insurance runs and extend its lead to 11-5.
Charlotte got a run back on a solo homer to start the bottom of the seventh, but left the bases loaded, as East Carolina claimed the doubleheader sweep.
Leading the Pirates to a season-high 19 hits, Johnson finished the game 4-for-5 with four runs scored and two stolen bases, Oshiro was 3-for-3 with two walks and a pair of runs and Wynne batted 3-for-4 with three RBI. Alcorn went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Robbins finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Umphlett (3-1) earned the win in relief, going 4 1/3 innings, allowing six hits, three runs, three walks and struck out four.
ECU will close out the series on Sunday, March 16. First pitch has been moved up to 10 a.m., due to anticipated inclement weather.
