GREENVILLE, N.C. - After sweeping Saturday's doubleheader, the East Carolina suffered a 4-0 loss at Charlotte in the series finale on Sunday morning at the D.L. Phillips Softball Complex.
The Pirates (15-8, 4-2 C-USA) were held to just two hits, as seniors Chelsea Kaluhiokalani-Glackin and Jordan Lewis went 1-for-3. Junior Sarah Christian (11-3) allowed just one hit and no runs through the first five innings, but the 49ers' sixth-inning rally resulted in her taking the loss.
East Carolina and Charlotte (10-12, 2-4 C-USA) were locked in a pitcher's duel through the first five and one half innings, as Christian retired 10-straight batters from the final out of the second inning through the fifth. Forty-niners pitcher Lexi Betancourt was equally as impressive however, allowing just two hits and two talks during that span.
Charlotte broke through in the bottom of the sixth with a barrage of hits, including an RBI single, before a three-run home run off the bat of Courtney Carroll put the 49ers ahead, 4-0.
The setback marked just the second time all season in which the Pirates failed to score a run, and the first since a 10-0 defeat against Nevada on Feb. 9.
East Carolina will return home to host Marshall in a three-game C-USA series, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, March 21 at 4 p.m.
