GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina senior Joran Vliegen has been selected to participate in the upcoming NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles Championships, beginning May 21 in Athens, Ga. on the campus of the University of Georgia. Vliegen becomes the first individual from ECU to participate in the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championships, just a year after becoming one of the first two players invited to compete in the doubles championships.
"Joran is very well deserving of this invitation after the incredible year he has had," ECU Head Coach Shawn Heinchon said. "It's been a goal of his to make the NCAA Singles Championships since he made it for doubles last year. This is a great reward for him. All of his hard work has truly paid off."
Vliegen posted a 31-7 overall record this season as the Pirates' top singles player and is currently ranked No. 26 in Division I Men's Singles by the ITA. He defeated players from 11 ranked teams, including five top-15 opponents and compiled an 8-4 record versus ranked players.
