Pirates Tied For Third At Tar Heel Intercollegiate

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The East Carolina men's golf team is tied for third-place after round one of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate held Friday at Finley Golf Course near the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The Pirates posted a team score of 2-under 286 in Friday's first round to finish the day tied with Mercer and VCU. North Carolina has the team lead at 15-under 273, while Charlotte is second at 6-under 282.
Three ECU golfers rank among the top-20 after round one. Junior Jacob Hicks is tied for eighth-place after carding a 2-under 70, while fellow juniors Wes Conover and Al Dickens are tied for 20th at 1-under 71. Hicks pared 14 holes on Friday, the third-most in round one, in addition to sinking three birdies against one bogey. Conover and Dickens each recorded four birdies and three bogeys.
Freshman Tim Conover and junior college transfer Nick Thompson each made his ECU debut Friday. Conover shot a 2-over 74, while Thompson fired a 6-over 78.
Junior George Kilgore fired a 4-over 76, playing as an individual.
Furman's Bryce Howell is the tournament individual leader at 6-under 66 and holds a one stroke lead over three players from North Carolina.
The second round will begin Saturday morning with teams teeing off No. 1 beginning at 8 a.m.
