Pirates Wrap Fall Season At Wake Forest Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Tendai Tapfuma and freshman Ronny Georgi won the back draw of their respective singles flights, as the East Carolina men's tennis team concluded its fall season at the Wake Forest Invitational on Sunday.
Tapfuma dropped a tough three-set loss in his first round matchup, but responded with consecutive victories over Radford's Michael Meekers, UPenn's Nicolai Westerhaarad and Dartmouth's George Wall to cruise through the back-draw and claim the consolation crown. He concluded his fall campaign with a team-best 7-2 overall singles mark.
Georgi suffered the same fate in the opening match of his singles draw, but stormed through the consolation draw with three-consecutive straight-set victories over Liberty's Ryker Heller, Campbell's Louis Monterosso and Navy's Andre Malkjic to win the back-draw.
Placed in the same singles draw, freshmen James Ling and Will Bissett got off on the right foot with first round victories, but dropped their respective quarterfinal matches. After falling into the fifth-place bracket, Ling won back-to-back decisions in straight sets over UNC Greensboro's Ian Melnik and Wofford's Andrew Graham to win the mini draw.
In doubles action, Tapfuma and Ling teamed up for a first round win, but fell to the top seed in the semifinals of their respective draw. The duo took advantage of the misfortune by dispatching Duke's Daniel McCall and Adrian Chamdani, 8-4, to claim third place.
East Carolina will begin its dual match season on Monday, Jan. 18 against Longwood. Opening serve is scheduled for 12 noon at the ECU Indoor Tennis Complex.
