March 10, 2015 | Women's Tennis
TAMPA, Fla. - Allison Miller and Julie Vrabel outlasted Maria Gomez and Neena Wanko in a second-seeded doubles match to spark No. 28 Notre Dame's 4-0 non-conference neutral site victory over East Carolina Tuesday morning at the Hillsborough Community College Tennis Center.
After Quinn Gleason and Monica Robinson teamed up to defeat the Pirates' Michelle Castro and Nicole LaDuca 6-1 in the pairs opener at No. 1, Gomez and Wanko were edged 7-6 in a No. 2 battle to give the Irish a 1-0 lead.
Notre Dame (8-4) followed by notching straight-set singles wins at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 slots to complete the sweep, which was only the third suffered by the Pirates in 14 outings this season.
Castro fell to Robinson 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2, Gomez lost to Vrabel 6-0, 6-4 in the middle of the lineup while Mary Closs cruised past Sarah Sarjoo 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 4 position to clinch the victory for the Irish.
The Pirates' Katie Hoch, playing at No. 5, captured ECU's only set by downing Miller 6-4 but the match was halted as soon as Notre Dame secured its fourth point. In addition, LaDuca (No. 1) and Wanko (No. 6) both trailed in their respective meetings when play was stopped.
East Carolina (9-5) will close out its four-match roadswing through Florida by playing a split doubleheader against Bryant College (9 a.m.) and McMurry College (1 p.m.) in Lakeland on Wednesday.
