Pirates Close Florida Trip With Doubleheader Sweep

LAKELAND, Fla. - East Carolina posted straight-set wins in eight of 12 singles matches and captured five of six doubles bouts while recording 4-1 and 7-0 non-conference victories over Bryant (R.I) and McMurry (Texas), respectively, in women's tennis doubleheader action Wednesday morning at the Florida Southern College Tennis Complex.
In the opener against Bryant, Dana Gray and Katie Hoch defeated the Bulldogs' Nina Luiggi and Linnea Sjoberg 6-3 in a No. 3 doubles matchup to help the Pirates jump out to a 1-0 lead before taking the first three singles meetings. Hoch (6-0, 6-0 at No. 5) and Nicole LaDuca (6-4, 6-4 at No. 1) both cruised in straight sets, while Sarah Sarjoo (6-1, 3-6, 10-2 at No. 4) was pushed to a third stanza before clinching the team victory.
Against McMurry in the second tilt, ECU combined to post an 18-2 doubles ledger and a 72-8 singles mark from all six positions in its lineup. Maria Storozheva and Betsy Zurawel opened pairs play with a 6-0 win at No. 2 before the top-seeded tandem of LaDuca and Meredith Smith secured the opening tally with an 6-1 victory. Hoch and Gray followed with straight-set 6-0, 6-0 shutouts at the No. 3 and No. 4 slots to spark the Pirates in singles play.
East Carolina (11-5), which is just one win shy of matching its entire victory total from last year, will take a week off before continuing its nine-match road swing by visiting Elon on Wednesday, March 18. First serve is set for 2:30 p.m.
