
Pirates Lose Close Match At UNCG, 4-3

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis team suffered a 4-3 setback to UNCG Wednesday at the UNCG Tennis Courts. With the loss the Pirates fall to 9-9 on the season while the Spartans improve to 7-6 in non-conference action.
ECU fell behind 1-0 to UNCG after Colin Roller alongside doubles partner Tendai Tapfuma lost to Randy Phillips and Connor Thompson 6-1 on court one. The Pirates' No. 3 doubles tandem of Patriek Wolterbeek and Nicolas Soriano evened things up with a 6-2 win over Daniel Mack and Cameron Smith. William Albright and Warren Bryan clinched the point for the Spartans with a 7-6 (7-3) win on court two over Ross Nigro and Fredric Lehfeldt.
After that, East Carolina fought back to earn singles wins on courts two, five and six, but dropped a pair of three set matches at positions three and four as the Spartans took the match. Soriano took home a singles victory for the Pirates at the No. 2 singles position with a straight set defeat over Thompson, 6-4, 6-2. Kasey Countee was also a winner on court five after posting a three set thriller over Bryan, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Roller defeated Albright in straight sets on court six, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
The East Carolina men's tennis team returns action when it plays March 27 at Charlotte with a 12 p.m. first serve.
