No. 48 Houston Blanks Pirates 7-0 In AAC Action
March 20, 2015 | Women's Tennis
HOUSTON, Texas - Houston, ranked No. 48 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Poll, won three of its six singles matches in straight sets and garnered the doubles point to close out the scoring during a 7-0 American Conference victory over East Carolina at the Houston Country Club Friday afternoon.
The Cougars (14-4, 5-0 AAC), winners of 10 straight, used a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 triumph by Mina Markovich over Sarah Sarjoo at the No. 4 position to clinch the victory after the two teams elected to play singles first rather than opening with the traditional pairs play. Markovich's success followed straight-set UH wins by Despoina Vogasari over Nicole LaDuca (6-3, 6-2) at No. 1, Tina Rupert against Maria Gomez (6-1, 6-2) at No. 3 and Elena Kordolaimi versus Michelle Castro (6-2, 6-3) at No. 2.
Similar to Sarjoo, Katie Hoch and Neena Wanko each pushed their respective singles battles to a third set but fell to Maria Cardenas (6-3, 4-6, 6-4) and Angela Lorenzo (6-4, 1-6, 6-2) at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
Hoch and Dana Gray accounted for the Pirates' only victory of the afternoon as the pair downed Lorenzo and Markovic 7-6 in a No. 3 meeting, but the Cougars had already tallied the tandem point by taking the No. 1 and No. 2 matches.
East Carolina will finish up its brief Texas trip Saturday by facing conference foe SMU in Dallas beginning at 11 a.m.
