April 03, 2015 | Women's Tennis
RICHMOND, Va. - East Carolina convincingly earned the doubles point and added three singles wins, two in three-set fashion, to down Richmond, 4-2, in non-conference women's tennis action Friday afternoon at the Westhampton Tennis Complex.
The victory improved the Pirates' spring record to 12-9, which already equals ECU's entire win total from a year ago. The Spiders, who entered today's action with an eight-match win streak, fell to 11-3.
East Carolina used a pair of 6-0 triumphs in doubles play to jump out to a 1-0 lead. Michelle Castro and Nicole LaDuca blanked Anna Abadias Morales and Melissa Kandinata at the No. 1 slot before Dana Gray and Katie Hoch produced an identical result over Gaby Rosales and Kelsey Williams at No. 3.
With the match tied 2-2, Hoch and Maria Gomez each tallied three-set wins to decide the outcome. Gomez battled past Kandinata 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 in a No. 3 meeting for a 3-2 edge before Hoch secured the Pirates' team victory by outlasting Williams 7-5, 4-6, 6-0 at No. 5. Neena Wanko accounted for ECU's other tally by cruising past Katya Salas 6-2, 6-2 at the bottom of the lineup.
The Spiders posted wins in a pair of straight-set decisions as Brittany Boys defeated Sarah Sarjoo 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 and Abadias Morales dismissed LaDuca 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1.
The Pirates will wrap up their regular season schedule by traveling to Storrs, Conn. for a pair of American Athletic Conference matches next week. ECU will face the host Huskies at 2 p.m. on Friday before battling Cincinnati in a neutral site meeting on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
