RALEIGH, N.C. --- East Carolina junior Tim Conover shot a two-day total of 12-under-par 201 to capture medalist honors and lead the Pirates to a wire-to-wire victory at the 2016 Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate at Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
Conover posted a final round score of 4-under 67 Tuesday to capture medalist honors for the first time as a Pirate. He led the 90-player field with 17 birdies to match the second-lowest 54-hole tournament score in school history.
"Tim was superb all week," ECU Head Coach Press McPhaul said. "He was exemplary in all facets of the game. There is no doubt that he was the best player in the field."
The Pirates posted a final day score of 287 to finish the tournament at 15-under 837 (271-279-287), to win their first tournament of the season by three strokes over runner-up Kennesaw State (840).
ECU's 837 is the third-lowest team score in program history and the victory was the 12th under coach McPhaul.
"This is very gratifying," McPhaul said. "We have made huge steps forward since our first event. Our guys have worked hard at their skills and they've been working hard to develop a great mindset. That showed today as the wind picked up and the course got harder. They displayed grit, determination and patience."
NC State finished third at 3-under 849, while Maryland claimed fourth-place honors at 5-over 857. Campbell was fifth at 9-over, followed by Augusta (+11), Rhode Island (+12), Wofford (+15), UNCG (+16) and Winthrop (+17).
ECU redshirt junior Jackson Spires shot par-71 in round three to finish tournament at 2-under 211 and tied for fifth-place. It was his first top-5 finish of the season and fourth of his career. Senior Jack Sides finished with a 54-hole score of par-213 to finish tied for 13th and earn his second career top-15 finish.
Freshmen Patrick Stephenson and Blake Taylor each shot 9-over 222 to tie for 54th, while fellow rookie Logan Shuping posted an 11-over 224.
The Pirates return to action Oct. 10-11 as they compete at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate in Bridgeport, W.Va. and hosted by West Virginia University.
