February 20, 2016 | Baseball
GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Junior Jacob Wolfe tossed six scoreless innings while striking out a career-high seven batters in East Carolina's 9-6 win over Longwood Saturday afternoon at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Wolfe (1-0), who scattered three singles and issued one walk, retired 11 batters in a row at one point from the second to sixth innings, which included five consecutive strikeouts before turning the game over to the bullpen. Joe Ingle picked up his first save of the season allowing one hit that scored two of the three runners he inherited before recording the final two outs in the ninth.
Davis Kirkpatrick, who sat out last season following Tommy John surgery, returned to the mound working two innings of relief allowing one run (unearned) on one hit with three strikeouts. Luke Bolka (0.0 IP, 2 H, 4 Rs) and Denny Brady (0.1 IP, 2 Hs, 1 R) also made relief appearances on the day.
Tyler Wirsu (0-1) lasted just 2.1 innings surrendering five runs (all earned) on three hits with three walks in the loss. Michael Catlin didn't fare any better after he was touched for four runs (all earned) on nine hits in 3.2 frames. Cody Boydstun closed out the game tossing 2.0 scoreless frames with two strikeouts.
The Pirates (2-0) offense produced double-digit hits for the second-straight contest outhitting the Lancers (0-2) 14 to 9. Dwanya Williams-Sutton was 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored, while Garrett Brooks and Eric Tyler registered multiple hits.
Longwood's Connar Bastaich, Alex Lewis and Sammy Miller each had a pair of hits, while Lewis and Miller drove in two runs each.
How It Happened:
ECU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Bryce Harman plated Parker Lamm on a sac fly to right field. Lamm led off the frame with a walk and moved to third on Travis Watkins' single to right center.
The Pirates plated four runs in the third pushing their lead to 5-0 thanks to a two-RBI double by Williams Sutton, an RBI ground out to short by Brooks and an infield RBI single off the bat of Wesley Phillips.
A two-RBI single to left field in the fifth by Brooks plated Eric Tyler and Williams-Sutton making it a 7-0 ball game. ECU added two more runs in the sixth on a Lancer failed pickoff at third that scored Lamm and a sac fly by Watkins that pushed across Charlie Yorgen.
Holding a comfortable 9-1 lead going to the ninth, Longwood made things interesting sending 10 guys to the plate and scoring five runs. Michael Osinski had an RBI double, Lewis scored a pair on a single up the middle and Miller laced a one-out double down the left field line plating two more.
Game Notes:
All nine Pirate starters collected at least one hit ... On the season, 10 of ECU's 18 RBI have come with two outs (one in Game 2) ... Garrett Brooks and Eric Tyler have recorded multiple hits in both contests, while seven players have registered at least one hit in both games this season ... ECU's starters (Evan Kruczynski and Wolfe) have combined to toss 13.0 scoreless innings while allowing four hits and striking out 13 against the Lancers.
