
ECU Finishes Fourth At The American Championship

LECANTO, Fla. --- The East Carolina men's golf team finished in fourth-place at the 2016 American Athletic Conference Championship Tuesday afternoon, shooting a final round total of 6-over-par 294 to finish at 9-over 873 for the tournament.
No. 15 USF repeated as conference champion with a three-day total of 19-under 845 to win by 20 strokes ahead of No. 35 Memphis at 1-over 865. Houston finished in third-place at 7-over 871.
UCF finished at 12-over 876, three strokes behind ECU, in fifth-place followed by Cincinnati (+27), UConn (+32), Temple (+37) and Tulsa (+60) to round out the final standings.
USF's Aksel Olsen claimed individual medalist honors by one stroke over Thomas Perrot of Memphis. Olsen fired a 54-hole score of 7-under 209 with Perrot carding a 6-under 210, which included a 5-under 67 on Tuesday.
East Carolina senior Wes Conover posted the Pirates' top finish with a 2-under 214 to tie for sixth. He was one of four players to birdie 36 holes during the tournament, tops in the 45-player field.
Jacob Hicks, one of four ECU seniors playing in the championship, finished tied for 12th-place at 1-over 217 after firing a 2-over 74 in round three. Sophomore Tim Conover finished one stroke behind his teammate in 14th at 2-over 218, while Al Dickens placed 27th at 10-over 226. George Kilgore tied for 33rd at 13-over 229.
ECU hopes to have its season extended for the fourth time in six years Thursday, May 5, when the 2016 NCAA Regional selections are announced. The six sites hosting this year are: Baton Rouge, La. (University Club), Murfreesboro, Tenn. (The Grove), West Lafayette, Ind. (Kampen Course), Stanford, Calif. (Stanford Golf Course), Austin, Texas (UT Golf Club) and Auburn, Wash. (Washington National Golf Club).
The Regionals will be announced live on The Golf Channel during Morning Drive and will be streamed live on The Golf Channel website. The 2016 NCAA Championship is in Eugene, Ore., at the Eugene Country Club, May 27-June 1.
