Women’s Basketball Joins Stop Hunger Now for MLK Day of Service
January 16, 2017 | Women's Basketball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina's women's basketball team spent Monday afternoon volunteering at Peace Presbyterian Church in conjunction with the nation-wide MLK Day of Service. The team joined the local Greenville community in the afternoon session to package over 7,000 meals for Stop Hunger Now. In total, volunteers at Peace Presbyterian Church helped measure, sort and package over 20,000 meals that will be sent out to people and places that need them most on Monday.
"It was fun to come out and serve our community today," said Bre McDonald. "Especially on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Before we started packaging meals, we were taught about the hunger crisis in the US and across the globe. It makes you realize how fortunate we are to be given the opportunities we have as student-athletes at East Carolina and that is why it is important that we continue to give back to those less fortunate than us. It really warms my heart to be here."
Stop Hunger Now is a Raleigh-based organization that has meal-packaging programs in 19 U.S. cities and South Africa, Malaysia, India, Italy and the Philippines.
Founded in 1998, it has provided over 180 million meals in 65 different countries. This year, Stop Hunger Now will package 45 million meals and will ship nine million dollars in donated aid.
East Carolina's women's basketball program sets a team goal each year to complete 500 hours of community service. This year the Pirates have challenged themselves to surpass that and will continue to serve the greater Greenville area with every opportunity they get.
