Gameday Preview: East Carolina at UConn
January 21, 2017 | Men's Basketball
HARTFORD, Conn. --- A week removed from its last game, East Carolina will look to end a five-game losing streak Sunday at the XL Center against UConn. The game is slated for a 6 p.m. start and will be televised by CBS Sports Network.
The Pirates will be playing their first game without head coach Jeff Lebo, who underwent successful hip surgery earlier in the week and their second straight without leading scorer B.J. Tyson, who is sidelined indefinitely with a leg injury.
There is no timetable for Lebo's return and assistant coach Michael Perry will assume the head coaching duties in Lebo's absence.
Prior to joining the ECU coaching staff 10 years ago, Perry spent five years as the head coach at Georgia State, taking over during the middle of the 2002-03 season for Lefty Driessel.
Although ECU played superb defense against No. 22 Cincinnati a week ago, the Pirates offensive woes continued and cost them a shot at knocking off the first-place Bearcats.
ECU held Cincinnati to a season-low 55 points as well as a season-low 32.6 percent shooting. The Pirates rank fifth among all NCAA Division I teams holding their opponents to 37.7 percent shooting. They are also limiting their foes to 62.2 points per game, 14th fewest in the nation.
UConn ranks among the national field goal percent leaders too, holding opponents to 39.2 percent shooting.
The Huskies enter Sunday's game having lost their last two games (at Georgetown, at SMU) and six of eight overall. Sophomore Jalen Adams leads UConn with 14.9 points per game followed by senior Rodney Purvis with 12.4 points per game. Adams is also averaging an American Athletic Conference-best 6.5 assists per game.
UConn senior Ketan Facey is the Huskies's leading rebounder with 7.2 per game with fellow senior Amida Brimah posting a league-best 2.9 blocks per game.
East Carolina also features two active double figure scorers, Kentrell Barkley and Caleb White. Barkley has led the Pirates in scoring in five of the last seven games and is averaging 10.8 points per game and White is netting 10.7 points per night.
Andre Washington ranks sixth in the conference in rebounding with 7.4 per night and is second in the league with 2.8 blocks per game.
ECU has lost five in a row to UConn and trails 6-1 in the all-time series.
