Soccer's Season Comes to an End with 1-0 Loss to Cincinnati

Cincinnati, Ohio – The ECU soccer season came to an end on Friday night with a 1-0 loss on the road to Cincinnati at Gettler Stadium. The Pirates finish 6-10-2 overall and 1-8 in the American Athletic Conference while the Bearcats complete the regular season 12-3-3 overall and 5-2-2 in the league.

It was an even played first half with Cincinnati holding a 6-5 edge over ECU in shots. Michelle Newhouse kept the Bearcats off the board early stopping a penalty kick but minutes before halftime Sophie Gorman scored off a rebound to give UC a 1-0 lead.

Both teams battled through the second half of freezing rain and dropping temperatures. Cincinnati outshot ECU 8-3 and had three corner kick opportunities but the Pirates kept them from adding an insurance goal.

Cashlin Copley took a trio of shots, all on goal for ECU while Kim Sanford, Tori Riggs and Anna Fish all recorded shots on goal as well.

"Our teams' compete level was fantastic tonight. It was harsh conditions with freezing rain which was brutal for both teams. We created a lot of good opportunities to score but we just didn't connect. Cincinnati is one of the top teams in the country and they've been nationally-ranked at points in the season. Michelle [Newhouse] made a great save stopping a penalty kick but they, [Cincinnati] scored their goal shortly after. Unfortunately, it's been the way our conference season has gone – not finishing on our opportunities. I have to give the team credit, with no postseason to play for they came out and played a heck of a game tonight."
