Gameday: Pirates Look To Stay Hot Against Charlotte
December 17, 2017 | Men's Basketball
GREENVILLE, N.C. --- When ECU and Charlotte meet on the hardwood Monday night, it'll be a matchup of teams going in different, yet similar directions.
The Pirates have won three in a row since Michael Perry took over as interim head coach after Jeff Lebo's resignation on Nov. 29 following a 2-4 start.
Two weeks later, the 49ers also made a coaching change as head coach Mark Price was released from his contract Thursday following a four-game losing streak and a 3-6 start. Assistant coach Houston Fancher, who was the head coach at Appalachian State for eight seasons, will lead Charlotte on an interim basis beginning Monday.
"Whenever there's a coaching change, from an opponent's standpoint, you're worried about the players' response to the change in coaching staff," Perry said. "Sometimes that can be a positive thing, sometimes it can be a negative. I would expect them to do a lot of things they've been doing before.
"They have some speed, they have some size. The guard Jon Davis isn't playing like he did last year. We all know he's a quality player. He was an all-conference player averaging about 18 points a game. He hasn't been scoring at that level, but he will. He's too talented a player."
Davis played alongside ECU guard Isaac Fleming in high school at National Christian Academy.
Fleming has scored double figures in each of the Pirates' last five games and has averaged 19.0 points per game during their current three-game winning streak. He scored 12 of his team-high 19 points in the second half to lead ECU from 17 points down to a 69-66 win over Campbell in its last game two weeks ago.
In addition to Fleming, B.J. Tyson (18.3 ppg), who leads the team overall in scoring with 15.3 ppg, is one of four players that are averaging double figures during the winning streak along with Kentrell Barkley (13.3) and freshman Shawn Williams (10.7).
ECU and Charlotte are facing off for the fourth consecutive season and 25th time overall. The 49ers lead the all-time series 16-8, but the Pirates have won two of the last three meetings (both in Greenville) overall and four of the last five meetings at home.
