GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina track and field programs will shoot for some hardware this weekend when the Pirates travel to Alabama for the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Â
The event features 11 women's teams and seven men's teams. Cincinnati, UConn, ECU, Houston, Memphis, USF and Tulsa will have both men's and women's teams competing while UCF, SMU, Temple and Tulane only have women participating.
Â
The American Digital Network will provide live and on-demand coverage of the meet beginning at 10 a.m. ET on Friday, Feb. 24.
Â
"Both teams are excited to compete this weekend," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "We are prepared both mentally and physically about as good as we can be going into these championships. Both teams are up for the challenge as this conference is very competitive. We have a number of different goals going into this meet, but the biggest goal we would like to achieve is to have everybody go in and give their best of the year."
Â
Sophomore Stefano Migliorati is a strong contender in the 800-meter run as he currently holds the second-fastest time in the league as well as the school record (1:49.81). Classmate Nick Ciaccia enters the championships ranked third in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:38.23. Another Pirate to watch in the throws is sophomore Ryan Davis who currently holds the second-longest toss of the season among AAC athletes in the weight throw at 18.97 meters.
Â
On the women's side, senior Galissia Cause looks to strike gold in the shot put as she owns the third-best heave in the conference at 15.46 meters while junior Mohogany Baker ranks among the contenders in the weight throw with a toss of 19.32 meters – good for fourth in the league entering the weekend.
Â
"I told our athletes in a team meeting this week that we can't control what others do but only what we do. I also informed them that if they achieve their individual goals, then we achieve our team goals. You can't do any better than your best and the hope is that this competitive league will bring out the best in everyone. We can't look into a crystal ball and see what the outcome of this meet is going to be. We have to go into this meet and compete hard with great attitudes and let the chips fall where they may."
Â
The Pirates look to improve on last year's showing at the CrossPlex where the women took fifth place and the men finished seventh.
