PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. --- The East Carolina men's golf team is tied for ninth after the first 18 holes of The Hayt hosted by the University of North Florida at the Sawgrass Country Club.

The Pirates fired an opening round score of 8-over-par 296. UCF is the team leader at 285 followed by Louisville at 286 and Liberty at 289.

ECU freshman Patrick Stephenson is part of a 4-way tie for first-place at 3-under-par 69. He began his round from the 10^th tee and stood at 1-over through nine holes. He then birdied two of the first three holes on the front nine to drop to 1-under before a bogey on No. 4 brought him back to par. Stephenson followed with three birdies and two pars on the final five holes to finish the round at 3-under.

UAB's Taylor Eyster, North Texas' Thomas Rosenmueller and UCF's Manuel Elvira share the lead.

Junior Tim Conover carded a 75 followed by junior Jackson Spires and senior Jack Sides at 76. Freshman Blake Taylor rounded out the Pirates' five-man roster with a 77.

The tournament continues with round two Saturday. ECU begins play from the 10^th tee at 8:57 a.m. alongside players from Furman and UAB.
