Annapolis, Md. – East Carolina improved to 6-0 Sunday with a 6-1 convincing win over Navy. The Pirates are off to their best start under head coach Shawn Heinchon and will return to action at home first Richmond on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
Â
"It was a good day for the Pirates," Heinchon said. "The last time we played Navy they took it to us pretty good, so we are happy to get out of there with a win. Ronny and Will did a really good job of bouncing back from a poor doubles showing to playing very solid singles today."
Â
East Carolina won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Greg Durham and Jana Krishnan won the only doubles match for the Midshipmen with a 6-1 defeat of Will Bissett and Ronny Georgi, handing the Pirates No. 3 duo its first loss of the spring season. Kasey Countee and Freddie McGeehan improved to 4-2 on the season with a 6-4 win at the top of the lineup over Navy's Andrey Majkic and Aries Wong. Vlad Anghel and Fredric Lehfeldt secured the point for ECU with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles knocking off Zach Jennings and Thomas Pecor.
Â
Lehfeldt gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead when he made quick work of Matthew Lee at No. 4 singles. After shutting out Lee 6-0 in the first set, the Pirates lone senior won set two, 6-1. Anghel improved to 5-1 overall and 4-1 at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Gabriel Pilones making it 3-0 ECU. Bissett sealed the Purple and Gold's win with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Walker Sims at the No. 6 slot, improving to 4-1 in solo play. Countee shut down Jennings 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 singles for a 5-0 ECU lead but a three-set tiebreaker loss for McGeehan to Wong at No. 1 singles erased the Pirates hopes of a fourth shutout this season.
