Pirates Close Regular Season With Loss To Elon
April 14, 2017 | Men's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. ā The East Carolina men's tennis team closed out the regular season with a 5-2 loss to Elon Friday at the River Birch Tennis Center.
"Give Elon a lot of credit today," ECU Head Coach Shawn Heinchon said. "I think we are a hardĀ team to beat when we win the doubles point, which we did today. We lost a bunch of three-set matches in singles today, including a couple in which we were in the driver's seat most of the match but could not pull out a win.
"It's kind of a double edge sword, we are doing a great job of fighting and competing, which I love, but on the other hand we are not taking responsibility down the stretch and closing guys out when we have the chance. That is something we have to improve. I'mĀ disappointed in the result today butĀ not the work."
The Pirates (15-7) took that doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 flight. Ā Freddie McGeehanĀ andĀ James Ling posted a 7-5 win at the top flight position, while Kasey Countee andĀ Ronny Georgi registered a 6-1 victory from the third position. Fredric Lehfeldt was the lone ECU singles winner with a three-set triumph over Petar Tomic from the No. 4 position (6-4, 3-6, 6-3). Countee and William Bissett each opened their singles match by claiming the first set before falling in three. Georgi and Vlad Anghel each rallied from a set down to force a deciding third set, but both their opponents thwarted their rally.
The Pirates will return to the courts Thursday, April 20, in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Championships in Orlando.
