No. 1 USF Sends Pirates Home from AAC Tournament
April 21, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Orlando, Fla. – No. 8 seed East Carolina (16-9) saw its season come to an end Friday morning with a 4-0 loss to No. 1 seed USF in the American Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals at the USTA National Campus.
Â
"USF is the number one seed for a reason," head coach Shawn Heinchon said. "They are strong at every spot. We knew that was going to be hard for us to overcome, and it was. It's a strange feeling when your season is suddenly over. Overall, I think we did well but I feel, and I'm sure our guys do as well, that we left a few wins on the table towards the end of the year. Which is frustrating for us but we also understand its part of our process that will help our team to keep growing and improving."
Â
The Bulls claimed the doubles point winning at No. 1 6-0 over Freddie McGeehan and James Ling and No. 2 over Vlad Anghel and Fredric Lehfeldt.
Â
Peter Bertran defeated Lehfeldt 6-3, 6-3 on court four while Ronny Georgi took a loss at No. 3 singles after retiring. Jakub Wojcik defeated Javier Renones at the bottom of the singles lineup totaling four points for the Bulls who advance to face No. 5 seed Memphis in the semifinals Saturday. The Tigers advanced following a 4-2 win over No. 4 seed SMU in the quarterfinals.
Â
East Carolina finishes the season 16-9 overall. The Pirates strung together the longest win streak, six matches, under Heinchon when they began the 2017 campaign 6-0.

ECU bids farewell to lone senior, Lehfeldt, to graduation this spring and returns five singles starters in the fall.
