ATHENS, Ga. – East Carolina junior Lisa Pettersson carded an opening round 79 (7-over par) during first round action in the 2017 NCAA Women's Golf Athens Regional and is currently tied for 67th place. The three-day event is being held at the par-72, 6,344-yard University of Georgia Golf Course.
Pettersson, who is the fourth Pirate in school history to earn an individual invite to the NCAA Regionals, posted a front nine score of 37 (1-over). Her first nine holes consisted of six pars, two bogeys and one birdie on the par-5 ninth hole. On the back nine, Pettersson posted a score of 42 (6-over) registering six pars, one bogey, one double-bogey and a triple-bogey for an opening round 79.
Michigan State (284, 4-under) holds a five-shot lead over No. 3 Alabama (289, 1-over) after first round play. Host and No. 8 Georgia along with No. 11 Northwestern are tied for third at 293 (5-over) followed by No. 19 Baylor (296, 8-over) rounding out the top five.
Jennifer Kupcho (Wake Forest) fired an opening round 4-under par 68 to take a one-shot lead over Sarah Burnham (Michigan State), Alice Hewson (Clemson) and Lauren Stephenson (Alabama) who are in a three-way tie for second at 3-under (69).
Pettersson joins Adrienne Millican (2004), Lene Krog (2007) and Frida Gustafsson Spang (2015) as the only Pirates to earn individual invitations to a NCAA Regional.
Second round action begins 7:30 a.m. (ET) with Pettersson teeing off from the 10th hole at 8:15 a.m.
