Cross Country Program Opens 2017 Campaign At Temple Invitational
August 31, 2017 | Cross Country
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The ECU cross country program embarks on a new season Friday at the Temple Invitational hosted at Belmont Plateau. The facility is the site of this year's American Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships.
We are very excited to kick off the season at Temple's home cross country course this Friday," head cross country coach Josey Weaver said. "This will be a great meet to learn from - including where we are right now and what the conference course will look like. It's not about where we are currently, but where we will end up on October 28th. We will be back here then for the American Athletic Conference Championships and I expect to see big things out of our returners and newcomers.
This fall, the men will be looking for leadership from their two sets of brothers – Dean and Bakri Abushouk as well as twins Nick and Andrew Ciaccia. Bakri Abushouk joins the ECU program after earning all-conference and All-Southeast Region honors at NC State.
On the women's side, runners to watch include Victoria Cooke, Grace Sullivan, Sarah Hamon and Mikayla Stoudt. Sullivan was the top runner for ECU last season in five of six meets - including the NCAA Southeast Regional where she finished in 54th place.
"We had a motto this summer that went – "the time will come when fall will ask what were you doing all Summer," Weaver remarked. "We are working hard on positive self-expectancy. Our confidence, optimism, and just plan faith in ourselves will allow us to continue to raise the bar each time we compete. We tend to get what we expect – both from ourselves and from our teammates."
Following the Temple Invitational, the Purple and Gold returns to action Sept. 15 at the adidas Challenge in Raleigh, N.C.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to our conference brethren, the Houston Cougars, during their time of need. We encourage those who can, to help support the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts by texting HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation to the Red Cross, visit redcross.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS.
