GREENVILLE, N.C. – After clinching a spot in the conference tournament, the ECU women's soccer team will try to move up in the final standings with a Sunday match against UConn in Johnson Stadium.
ECU (9-5-2, 4-4-0) celebrated Senior Night on Friday night with a 1-0 win over Cincinnati. It was the second straight shutout for the Pirates, the second time they have earned consecutive clean sheets this season. ECU scored in the 31st minute when Cashlin Copley scored off a pass from Kim Sanford. Copley is the sixth Pirate to score a game-winning goal this season, joining Jenna Dages (who has three), Tori Riggs (who has two), Jayda Hylton-Pelaia, Madie Knaggs and Grace Doran.
The Pirates are currently in fifth place in the American Conference standings, giving ECU its highest ever finish in the conference. ECU still has a chance to move up to the No. 4 seed with a win over Connecticut. A win on Sunday would also give the Pirates an 8-1 record in Johnson Stadium, tying the program record that was set by the 1997 and 2007 teams. The nine wins so far this season are the most since the 2014 season for ECU.
Connecticut (4-13-0, 2-6-0) is in ninth in the conference standings and will finish its season on Sunday. The Huskies are coming off a 1-0 win over Temple. UConn has been outscored 42-21 this season The 42 goals allowed this season are the most by any AAC team. Sophia Danyko-Kulchycky leads the team with eight goals and 17 points while Elena Santos also has double-digit points, having scored four goals and added two assists. Randi Palacios has started 15 games in goal and has 71 saves.
Connecticut is a perfect 5-0-0 against ECU. Last season, the Huskies won 2-1 at home. ECU is 0-2 in Johnson Stadium against UConn. The Pirates fell 2-1 in 2016 and lost a 2-1 overtime match in 2014.
