RALEIGH, N.C. – The ECU men's golf team finished the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in fifth-place Sunday at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course on NC State University's Centennial Campus. The Pirates carded a 54-hole total of 14-under-par 850 (287-281-282) to claim their first top 5 finish of the season.
"Today was a fun day as all five players played together in the final round," ECU Head Coach Andrew Sapp. "It was a great experience to watch all of them at the same time. We played well, but not well enough to move up the leaderboard as the teams in front of us shot some really low scores."
Junior Blake Taylor led the Pirates in round three with a 3-under-par 69, following rounds of 69 and 68 Saturday to finish 10-under-par (206) to claim third-place. It was his first top 5 finish of the season and fourth of his career.
He made three birdies and three pars on his first six holes and followed with three consecutive pars. Taylor completed the round with two birdies, two bogeys and five pars on his final nine holes. He finished the event with 38 pars – second-most among the field.
Junior Patrick Stephenson rounded out the top 15 for the Pirates with a third round 70 to finish 12th at 6-under-par 210 (69-71-70). Sophomore Tim Bunten shot a third round 70 to tie for 29th at par 216 (74-72-70).
"That is what we were missing this week. The round or two in the mid-60s," Sapp said. "Great tournaments by Blake and Patrick to both have three rounds under par."
Freshman A.J. Beechler fired at 2-over-par 218 (75-70-73) and tied for 40th, while sophomore Stephen Carroll tied for 58th at 5-over-par 221 (75-73-73).
NC State won the event at 31-under-par, while the Wolfpack's Benjamin Shipp earned medalist honors at 13-under-par 203 (73-66-64).
ECU will continue its fall season at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate Oct. 12-14 in Johnson City.
