JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – The ECU men's golf team finished in eighth-place at the 2018 Bank Of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Sunday after shooting a 4-under-par 284 during the final round at the par-72, 7,147-yard Blackthorn Club at the Ridges.
The Pirates completed the tournament with 54-hole score of 8-under-par 856 (286-286-284), led by junior Blake Taylor, who finished two strokes back of the victor in third-place at 13-under-par 203 (67-67-69).
"Another great tournament by Blake this week," ECU Head Coach Andrew Sapp said. "He is playing some great golf. We need to provide him some help to get the team results we want. We have one more event to put it all together as team and we need to prepare well for our final fall tournament."
Taylor sank 18 birdies during the tournament, second-most among the 81-player field, to go along with 31 pars. It was his second straight top-3 finish after tying for third-place at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate last weekend.
Freshman A.J. Beechler posted ECU's second-lowest score of the tournament, finishing at par-216 (70-73-73). Junior Patrick Stephenson finished one stroke back of his rookie teammate at 1-over-par 217 (73-71-73). Sophomore Tim Bunten carded a 4-over-par 220 (76-75-69), but shaved three strokes off his score with a 3-under-par 69 during the final round. Fellow sophomore Stephen Carroll fired an 18-over-ar 234.
Host East Tennessee State (-32) edged Louisville (-31) by one stroke for the team title despite the Cardinals posting a final round score of 11-under-par 277, compared to the Buccaneers' card of 5-under-par 283. Tennessee (-29) finished four strokes in front of Kent State (-25) to claim third-place with Virginia Tech (-19) capturing fifth-place.
Louisville's Simon Zach carded a 15-under-par 201 (63-72-66) to win medalist honors.
ECU wraps up its fall slate later this month when it heads Greensboro for the Grandover Collegiate, Oct. 27-28, at the Grandover Resort.
