ECU Wins Pair Of Flight Titles at Spider Invite

RICHMOND, VA. – A trio of Pirates left with flight titles as the ECU men's tennis team finished up competition at the Spider Tennis Invitational hosted by the University of Richmond.

"Great competing across the board from all our guys," said assistant coach Ian Van Cott. "To come away with two flight titles is a great step forward for us. The guys really got better as a team this weekend. We will have a nice day off and then turn our sights to regionals this weekend."

In singles action, ECU went 14-6 overall and claimed a singles flight title for the second straight tournament. This time it was Wisse Jonker who earned the honor for the Pirates. The sophomore from The Netherlands won all four of his matches over the weekend, dropping just one set along the way.

Along with Jonker's title, ECU also had a pair of players finish in the top three of their respective flights. Vlad Anghel went 3-1 over the weekend and won the third-place match in flight B while Diogo Marques made it all the way to the final of flight D before finishing as the runner-up. Simon Labbe and Javier Renones each went 2-2 during the tournament as well.

In doubles, Renones and Labbe teamed to win their first title as a partnership. The pairing won three straight matches in flight C, beating teams from Georgetown, Campbell and William & Mary to claim the title. The other ECU duo, Anghel and Marques, lost their first two matches of the weekend, but were able to leave with a victory in their final match.

ECU will be back in action this Friday when the Pirates travel to Cary for the ITA Carolina Regionals, hosted by Duke University.
