Gameday: Pirates Look To Bounce Back Agianst Lamar
November 10, 2018 | Men's Basketball
Following a heartbreaking last-second loss at home to James Madison, the Pirates will return to the hardwood Sunday to face Lamar looking to bounce back from Friday's dramatic defeat.
The matinee will tip off at 4 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN3. It'll be the Pirates' first-ever meeting with the Lamar Cardinals of the Southland Conference, who are coming off an 88-69 loss at Georgia Tech on Friday.
The Pirates spent the majority of the second half playing from behind, entering the final period facing a five-point deficit. That deficit increased to 11 with 13:31 to play, but the Pirates continued to claw their way back and finally with 1:59 to play, Isaac Fleming tied the game at 69-all on a driving layup.
Junior Seth LeDay completed the comeback and put ECU up one, 72-71, with eight seconds left. However, that was more than enough time for JMU to advance the ball to half court, call a time out and call a play for senior Stucky Mosely to break the Pirates' hearts as time expired.
"We had two defenders with a hand in his face," LeDay said. "We've just got to give him credit. We had 22 turnovers and we've got to play better. It hurt."

LeDay led the Pirates with 21 points and K.J. Davis added a career-high 16 points while Fleming had 12.

"We gave ourselves a couple opportunities to win the game and they had a couple opportunities to put us away," ECU head coach Joe Dooley said. "I thought we were looking like we were a little dead in the water and the guys did a good job of fighting back and making some plays."

Sunday's game is part of the Deep South Showcase which also features Georgia Tech, Prairie View A&M, and Texas Rio Grande Valley. The round robin event is played exclusively on campus sites. ECU host Lamar, Prairie View and UTRGV while traveling to GT. Lamar host Prairie View and travels to the other aforementioned four participants.

The Cardinals are led by senior Nick Garth, who averaged 13.6 points per game last season and scored 15 points in their season-opening 79-59 win over Huston-Tillotson as well as in the loss to Georgia Tech,

Junior T.J. Atwood led the Cardinals with 17 points against the Yellow Jackets after scoring seven in against Huston-Tillotson. Senior Josh Nzeakor, the team's second-leading returning scorer this season (12.5 ppg) dropped 19 points in the season-opener and added 12 against Tech.
