WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – On the first road trip of the season, the ECU women's basketball team fell to William & Mary 63-43 on Tuesday night in Kaplan Arena.
Behind Early
The Pirates opened the game with field goals from Raven Johnson and Lashonda Monk to take a 4-0 lead. However, that was the only lead of the game for ECU (5-1) as William & Mary (3-2) controlled the first quarter. The Tribe shot 9-of-11 (.818) from the field in the opening frame and 5-of-5 from the free throw line to take a 24-15 lead at the end of the first.
Defensive Second
The second quarter was a struggle offensively for both teams. Both squads combined to shoot 7-of-32 (.219) from the field during the frame and scored just 18 points. The Pirates chipped two points off William & Mary's lead during the frame, as Jade Lewis scored five points while Johnson added three, to give her a team-high seven points for the game.
Up and Down Third Quarter
The third quarter started poorly for the Pirates. William & Mary came out of halftime and rattled off a 12-1 run to open an 18 point lead. After an ECU timeout, the Pirates began to cut into the lead. ECU went on a 10-0 run, with Justice Gee scoring six points, along with Alex Frazier and Tamia Hicks adding field goals. But with ECU back within eight points, William & Mary regained its footing with five points to finish the quarter and lead 49-36. The Tribe never gave the Pirates another chance to get back into the game, controlling the fourth quarter and closing out the win.
Tribe Leaders
The Tribe finished with an overwhelming 58-29 advantage in rebounds, including pulling in 47 defensive boards. Victoria Reynolds led William & Mary in scoring and rebounding, finishing with 15 points and 15 boards. Nyla Pollard also finished with a double-double, ending with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Bianca Boggs had nine points and 11 rebounds to just miss a double-double of her own.
Inside the Box Score
Raven Johnson finished with the first double-double of her career, finishing with 10 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. She is the first Pirate with 10 defensive rebounds since I'Tiana Taylor grabbed 11 at Houston on Feb. 17, 2016…Lewis hit a pair of shots from behind the arc for ECU to keep the Pirates' 21-game streak of at least one three-point field goal alive… The 43 points for ECU are the lowest total since recording 44 against USF in last season's AAC Tournament.
