GREENVILLE, N.C. – The 2018-19 women's basketball season is set to begin on Tuesday, Nov. 6, when ECU hosts Maryland Eastern Shore at 5:30 p.m., inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
The Pirates return 11 players from last year's team, including leading scorer Ariyana Williams and AAC All-Rookie team member Lashonda Monk. Williams led the Pirates with a scoring average of 9.1 points while Monk led the team with 9.2 points per game in conference play. Monk also led the team in steals with 75, including 10 in a win over SMU. Also returning are seniors Alex Frazier, Destiny Campbell and Salita Greene. Frazier led the club with 116 assists last season, while Greene led the team in rebounding, hauling in 6.2 boards per game. Campbell led the team in scoring seven times last year, the most among returners.
Tuesday night will mark the first game in charge for interim head coach Chad Killinger. He will be assisted by assistant coaches Nicole Mealing and Celeste Stewart. It will also mark the return to Minges Coliseum for Stewart, who will be back on the ECU sidelines for the first time since she finished her playing career in 2013.
Maryland Eastern Shore posted an 11-19 record last season and were picked to finish in fifth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's preseason poll, garnering one first-place vote. Ciani Byrom and Bairesha Gill-Miles are the top returners for the Hawks, with Byrom having led the team in scoring (11.1 ppg) and assists (3.1 apg) last season while Gill-Miles was named the MEAC Rookie of the Year after leading the Hawks in rebounding (7.6 rpg). Byrom was chosen to the Preseason Second-Team All-MEAC while Gill-Miles was chosen to the third-team.
It will be the fourth all-time meeting between the two programs, with ECU holding a perfect 3-0 record in the series. The two teams will play for the third straight season, with ECU winning 64-54 in 2017, as Campbell scored a team-high 14 points.
