Gameday: ECU Host UMES To Close Out Fall Semester
December 01, 2018 | Men's Basketball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – After snapping a two-game slide Friday night, ECU returns to the hardwood Sunday afternoon to close out its fall semester against Maryland-Eastern Shore at 4 p.m. inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
The Pirates rallied from 13 points down in the second half to top visiting Appalachian State, 83-81. Freshman Jayden Gardner recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds, going 16-of-19 at the free throw line. Seth LeDay, who's tip-in gave ECU an 82-81 lead with less than 25 seconds to play, finished with 18 points and nine rebounds. Sophomores Shawn Williams and K.J. Davis scored 15 and 10, respectively.
ECU has scored over 80 points in each of the last two games.
"We are playing more conventional teams right now and it will be interesting Sunday (against Maryland-Eastern Shore) because they muck it up a little bit and play a little different, but I do think we are getting a little bit of an offensive rhythm," ECU Head Coach Joe Dooley said.
UMES is coming off a 71-62 loss at home to Delaware Friday night. Bryan Urrutia led the Hawks with 15 points, six assists and three steals. Urrutia ranks third among all Division I players with 3.0 steals per game.
Ryan Andino lso finished in double figures for the Hawks with 12 points. Redshirt junior Dontae Caldwell finished tied with Cheeseman for the team high in rebounds with five.
This will be the first meeting between the Hawks and Pirates, who are 23-5 all-time against current members of MEAC.
Gardner (8.7) and LeDay (7.7) rank second and fifth in The American in rebounds per game with Gardner grabbing a league-best 3.4 offensive rebounds per game. Each also ranks among the Top-10 in the conference in field goal percentage.
The Pirates are 4-1 when out-rebounding opponents this season and have a plus-five average rebounding margin, while UMES is minus-10 on the boards per game.
Fans can catch a complete recap of the game and the season from Coach Dooley on Monday, Dec. 3, the first installment of the Joe Dooley Show will commence at Logan's Roadhouse on Greenville Blvd. in Greenville starting at 6 p.m. Fans are invited to come out to Logan's Roadhouse and talk Pirate basketball with Coach Dooley and "Voice of the Pirates" Jeff Charles.
