Following a seven-day layoff ECU returns to the court Wednesday, Feb. 14, for Valentine's Day date with American Athletic Conference rival Tulane inside Devlin Fieldhouse in New Orleans. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. EST and the game will be televised on ESPNEWS.
The Pirates haven't played since suffering a 90-73 loss at Temple a week ago, while the Green Wave is coming off a 31-point loss at Houston on Sunday, 73-42.
Tulane has lost three in a row since it beat the Pirates two weeks ago, 71-69 in overtime. ECU bounced back with an overtime win against Memphis three days later.
The Pirates had five players score in double figures in the first meeting of the year between two led by 15 points from freshman Shawn Williams. Kentrell Barkley added 12 points to go along with a season-high 18 rebounds, B.J. Tyson scored 12, and Isaac Fleming and K.J. Davis added 10 apiece.
Tulane forward Melvin Frazier led all scorers with 22 points and helped the Green Wave hold ECU to a mere two points in the overtime period.
"I thought the last time we played them, particularly when we went into the overtime period, we weren't as aggressive," ECU Interim Head Coach Michael Perry said. "We got a little conservative. The same situation happened the next game against Memphis and we were aggressive in the overtime period, and we were able to put some distance between them and us as a result.
"We're going to try ot look for earlier scoring opportunities against them and defend better hopefully than we have here recently. I'll take our defensive effort that we had here [against Tulane at home] on the road any day.
Williams has averaged 18.0 points per game over the last seven games and has emerged as one of the top rookies in The American, leading all freshmen in scoring.
Tyson sits 15 points shy of leading every player who ever stepped on the court in The American in scoring. Houston's Rob Gray holds the league's scoring mark with 1,463 points, but Tyson can eclipse him Wednesday night.
Tyson has scored double figures 16 times since, including each of the last three and 11 of the past 13.
Barkley is averaging 13 points and 13 rebounds the past three games and Fleming has scored double figures in five straight and grabbed a total of 24 rebounds during that stretch.
Tulane has five players averaging double figures led by Frazier (16.3 ppg), who ranks fifth in The American in scoring and leads it in field goal percentage (.588) and steals per game (2.3).
Cameron Reynolds stands one spot behind his teammate with 15.6 points per game and is averaging a team-high 6.8 rebounds per game. Samir Sehic, Jordan Cornish and Ray Ona Embo are also scoring 10 or more points per game for the Green Wave.
Tulane ended the Pirates' three-game series winning streak 14 days ago and holds a 14-10 advantage over the Pirates all-time. However, ECU has won four in a row in New Orleans and eight of the last 12 overall.
