HOUSTON --- ECU returns to the hardwood Sunday for an afternoon affair against American Athletic Conference rival Houston at the HP&E Arena on the campus of Texas Southern University, who is sharing its facility with the Cougars while they renovate their on-campus facility.
Â
The Pirates are 0-7 all-time against the Cougars in Houston and have lost five in a row in the overall series, including a 65-49 setback in Greenville last month.
Â
Houston senior Rob Gray and ECU senior B.J. Tyson have spent the last couple of weeks the regular season trading The American's career scoring lead. Gray has scored 1,513 points during his career and Tyson has dropped in 1,505 points.
Â
Tyson needs two points to take over sole possession of fifth-place on the school's all-time scoring list.
Â
He had 14 points in the loss to SMU Wednesday to become the sixth player in ECU history to score more 1,500 points. Junior Isaac Fleming scored a team-high 21 points against the Mustangs, who won their eighth straight against ECU.
Â
Fleming has scored double figures in a career-long eight games, averaging 14.7 ppg during that stretch and shooting 48.3 percent (43-of-89) from the field and 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from outside the 3-point arc.
Â
Freshman Shawn Williams had his double figure scoring streak halted Wednesday night, going just 1-for-11 from the field. However, he still leads all conference freshman in scoring with 11.9 points per game.
Â
The Pirates will be without the services of their leading rebounder Sunday after Kentrell Barkley was suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team Thursday following his ejection from Wednesday night's game versus SMU.
Â
Houston enters the game following a tough 91-85 loss at Memphis on Thursday night. Gray led all players with 30 points and seven assists, and guards Corey Davis Jr. and Armoni Brooks posted 15 points apiece while combining for nine of the team's 11 3-pointers.
Â
The Cougars are 13-0 at home this season and with a win Sunday will clinch a First-Round bye at the American Athletic Conference Championship, which tips off March 8 inside Amway Center in Orlando.
