GREENVILLE, N.C. – The ECU track and field program begins its outdoor season this weekend, taking part in the Weems Baskin Invitational March 23-24 at the Sheila and Morris Cregger Track on the campus of the University of South Carolina.
Â
The meet begins Friday morning at 9 a.m. with the men's javelin open event and ends Saturday at 4:30 p.m. with the men's high jump invitational competition.
Â
"We are very excited to get the outdoor season kicked off this weekend, Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "Both teams have been working extremely hard over the last three weeks. The break between the indoor season and the outdoor season has given us a chance to have some great practices and get healed up. The meet this weekend will provide some great competition and let us know where we stand right off the bat. As I have always reminded our teams, the goal is to get better each and every weekend."
Â
The Pirates return a pair of student-athletes who captured conference titles at last year's American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships in junior Stefano Migliorati (800m) and senior Mohogany Baker (Discus). ECU also advanced 13 to the NCAA East Preliminary.
Â
Team-wise, the Pirate women finished in third place at the AAC Outdoor Championships in 2017 while the men took fourth – the highest placement for both teams since joining the conference.
Â
ECU has five meets to prepare for the league outdoor meet, including its own Bill Carson Invitational scheduled for April 6-7 at the Minges Family Field at Bate Foundation Track & Field Facility. Following the Weems Baskin Invitational, the Pirates will take part in the Raleigh Relays March 30-31 at NC State.
